What is a Preposition? (ಉಪಸರ್ಗಗಳು )

A preposition is a word placed before a noun or pronoun to show the relationship between that word and another word in the sentence.

Common relationships: place, time, direction, cause, manner

Definition: A preposition shows the relation between a noun/pronoun and another word.

ಉಪಸರ್ಗಗಳು ಎನ್ನುವುದು ಒಂದು ಪದವಾಗಿದ್ದು, ಅದು ನಾಮಪದ ಅಥವಾ ಸರ್ವನಾಮದ ಮುಂಚೆ ಬಂದು ಅದರ ಸಂಬಂಧವನ್ನು ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಪದದೊಂದಿಗೆ ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

Kinds of Prepositions (ಉಪಸರ್ಗಗಳ ವಿಧಗಳು)

1. Prepositions of Place (ಸ್ಥಳ ಸೂಚಕ ಉಪಸರ್ಗಗಳು)

Shows position or place.

Examples:

a) The book is on the table.

ಪುಸ್ತಕವು ಮೇಜಿನ ಮೇಲೆ ಇದೆ.

b) The cat is under the chair.

ಬೆಕ್ಕು ಕುರ್ಚಿಯ ಕೆಳಗೆ ಇದೆ.

c). She is in the room.

ಅವಳು ಕೊಠಡಿಯ ಒಳಗೆ ಇದ್ದಾಳೆ.

2. Prepositions of Time (ಕಾಲ ಸೂಚಕ ಉಪಸರ್ಗಗಳು)

Shows time.

Examples:

a) I will come at 5 PM.

ನಾನು 5 ಗಂಟೆಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತೇನೆ.

b). She was born in 2005.

      ಅವಳು 2005ರಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.

c ). We have a holiday on Sunday.

     ನಮಗೆ ಭಾನುವಾರ ರಜೆ ಇದೆ.

3. Prepositions of Direction (ದಿಕ್ಕು ಸೂಚಕ ಉಪಸರ್ಗಗಳು)

Shows movement from one place to another.

Examples:

a) He is going to school.

    ಅವನು ಶಾಲೆಗೆ ಹೋಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾನೆ.

b) The bird flew into the sky.

     ಹಕ್ಕಿ ಆಕಾಶಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾರಿತು.

c) She walked towards me.

   ಅವಳು ನನ್ನ ಕಡೆ ನಡೆದುಬಂದಳು.

4. Prepositions of Manner (ರೀತಿ ಸೂಚಕ ಉಪಸರ್ಗಗಳು)

Shows how something is done.

Examples:

a) He came by bus.

    ಅವನು ಬಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದನು.

b) She wrote with a pen.

ಅವಳು ಪೆನ್ನಿನಿಂದ ಬರೆದಳು.

5. Prepositions of Cause/Reason (ಕಾರಣ ಸೂಚಕ ಉಪಸರ್ಗಗಳು)

Shows reason or cause.

Examples:

a) He died of illness.

    ಅವನು ರೋಗದಿಂದ ಸತ್ತನು.

b) She is crying because of pain.

    ಅವಳು ನೋವಿನ ಕಾರಣ ಅಳುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾಳೆ.

6. Prepositions of Agent/Instrument (ಕರ್ತೃ/ಸಾಧನ ಸೂಚಕ)

    Shows who did the action or what was used.

Examples:

a) The letter was written by him.

    ಆ ಪತ್ರವನ್ನು ಅವನು ಬರೆದನು.

b) The cake was cut with a knife.

    ಕೇಕ್ ಅನ್ನು ಚಾಕುವಿನಿಂದ ಕತ್ತರಿಸಲಾಯಿತು.

in, on, at, under, over, between, among, to, from, with, by, for, of
